Students will critically examine the role of power, race, gender, and conceptions of the subject have in shaping K-12 education in the United States.  Drawing on field experiences in K-12 school settings, students will utilize ethnographic practices to explore two complicated questions influencing the educative experience: What does it mean to become educated? And for whom?

Ventures: Where have all the teachers gone?
Every single day K-12 teachers make invaluable contributions to society under immense pressure to prepare the next generation. While many schools currently employ highly qualified and passionate teachers, the U.S. public education system always needs more! This course will explore teachers’ decision to enter, stay, and/or leave the profession from a variety of perspectives. Throughout the semester students will glean diverse insights into the challenges and motivations contextualizing the role of K-12 teachers.  Upon examining how history, school culture, and socio-economic systems shaped K-12 teaching, students will develop a justifiable solution to increase teacher recruitment and retention in public schools.
