Abigail Launius
USM Elementary Teacher Candidate

BIO

Ever since I was old enough to work, I found that I preferred and excelled in childcare. When I was a senior in high school, I was privileged to be a mentor to two local elementary students. This experience as well as my childcare work pushed me towards the teaching career path. Working with children has given me an introspective perception that has made me a better caregiver and human in general. As a future teacher, I understand that school plays a huge role in children’s social, emotional, and physical needs in addition to their cognitive needs. I hope that through my continuing education, I can strengthen my student’s path to success, without limiting their self-worth to their academic performance.

WHY

RESEARCH?

This opportunity in undergraduate research has given me the knowledge and confidence I needed to view my professional journey in a different light. As earth changes and progresses, so do we. The time to reflect and revisit old or traditional ways of thinking and doing is now. With access to educational research, the opportunities for new ways of teaching and learning are endless. My goal through this research is to reimagine what my students need for success and learn more about what I can do as a teacher to support these needs in a way that brings equitable learning opportunities to each student.

QUESTIONS

THAT KEEP ME

 UP AT NIGHT

  • What ‘hidden’ messages are we sending our students through the curriculum and instruction we are providing them?
  • What information could be taught in a classroom setting to help our students prepare for the ‘outside world?’ What information is currently being left out?
